Federal judge rules, a ban on the cultivation of genetically engineered crops, otherwise known as "GMO"'s, by the County of Maui, is invalid, being pre-empted by federal & state laws.

Rod Antone, Maui County spokesman, says the county will abide by the judge's ruling, according to reports from The Associated Press.

The measure, which called for a moratorium on the further growth of genetically engineered crops until further scientific studies could be conducted, was initially passed back in November, by Maui voters who approved the ballot initiative.  According to the ordinance, the moratorium would only be able to be lifted after a vote by the Maui County Council.
